A luxurious and comfortable lounge reclining chair added to the Alu Group series and released to the market in 1969. The Eames Soft Pad Recliner, constructed in the same way as the original 'ribbed' Alu Group recliner from 1959, but with additional lumber and seat support and a new level of comfort. The chair featured a distinctive high back with 4 separate 2-inch thick cushions.
The Eames Soft Pad recliner was originally released in two options, one with arms (EA222) and one without (EA421) but both featured a full 360 degree swivel and torsion bar reclining mechanism. The chair was also the first of the Alu Group to be released solely in leather, with black being the only available option upon its initial release.
Into the 1970's and the Soft Pad series had a small revision in design and shape in 1973. This resulted in the series being reclassified with the arm version becoming EA422 and the one without EA421. The overall size of the design had been reduced ever so slightly and a little extra depth had been afforded to it. This subtle change in the shape and size of the design added to the comfort by providing the most ergonomic seating position. Upholstery choices too had been added with more leather colors and fabric options.
By the 1980's the Eames Soft Pad recliner chair was given the new style of 5 star Universal base and was reduced to only the arm chair version. In 2011 Herman Miller reverted the design back to the 4 star original variant.
The Soft Pad series models exactly mirrored that of the original 'ribbed' Alu Group and in addition to the recliner other lounge models included the Lounger and the Ottoman. The Eames Soft Pad Recliner has been in continuous production since its launch in 1969.
Alu Group and Soft Pad model codes are the source of great confusion because the model numbers changed with re-classification and design changes through the years. Most notable the codes changed from the 2XX series to the 4XX series with a design change in the early 70's and then again with a change of base in the mid 80's. Our full Alu Group classification is a great resource for helping with all codes and these are those related to the Soft Pad Recliner:
Height | 40" | 101.60 cm |
Width | 23" (without arms) 26" (with) | 66.04 cm |
Depth | 32" | 81.28 cm |
Seat Height | 18" | 45.72 |
Frame | Sand-Cast Aluminium, finished in either ‘cool-tone’, ‘warm-tone’ and ‘eggplant’ with torsion bar reclining |
Upholstery | Leather, later hopsack fabrics, custom fabrics |

The first generation of Soft Pad Recliner was released on the 4 leg Universal (or Cruciform) aluminum base
1st Generation
The Soft Pad Recliner, released in 1969, was issued on a Universal Base with 4 legs in a cross position. The base was designed to take either glides or castors but of course the Recliner only had the floor glide option.
The first generation was available either with arms (EA222) or without (EA221) but both versions could swivel and recline using the torsion bar system clearly visible above the base, underneath the chair seat. After the second generation, Herman Miller re-introduced this base from 2011.
Estimated years 1968-1985 and 2011-Present
The second generation base of the Soft Pad Recliner was an updated 5 leg Universal (or Cruciform) base
2nd Generation
In 1985 the Soft Pad Recliner changed from the 4 leg Universal base used since 1969 to one with a star pattern and 5 legs instead. The change was declared necessary for better overall stability of the chair group.
The Alu Group as a whole was also refined considerably during this period. The Recliner was reduced from two options to only one, with arms, swivel and tilting mechanism. The Soft Pad Recliner was re-coded as EA438. Post 2011 the 5 star base was discontinued and Herman Miller reverted back to the 4 star version.
