The molded plywood material, of which Charles Eames helped to pioneer during the second world war, was especially amenable in shaping into a great many varying forms. This enormous flexibility became a great source of inspiration and helped to give life to new and interesting home accessories as well as hugely popular furniture designs.
The post war US was boom time for the radio makers and cabinets formed with the molded plywood had perfect sound resonance, were cheap to make and mass produce. The Eames Radios were a series of enclosures, meant for home use, to house radios by leading makers of the day including Zenith, Emerson and Teletone. Whilst the radios find their way to the marketplace fairly frequently, another audio-visual Eames design of the mid 1950’s, the Eames Speakers, have proven to be rare finds indeed. Molded plywood was also used to make a pipe stand, no doubt a personal favorite of Charles Eames, as well as the ingenious folding partition screens in various lengths and sizes.
