These clever designs of Charles and Ray Eames were no mere works of visual art transformed into material pieces. They had aesthetics, they had function, they had variation and they had longevity all rolled into one.
There would even be a Japanese influence on the delightful and highly unusual LTR side table and ETR coffee table. Both pieces, primarily designed for domestic use, utilized the highly successful layered plywood as also seen in the chair designs. They were very low too and their designs were, for the late 1940’s, really a bold step away from tradition. The ETR was also known as the elliptical or surfboard table.
As the decades have passed, some of the Eames tables have never gone away, never left despite the change in fashion. By the mid 1960’s there was also a real depth of choice for the consumer and three highly successful table ranges which were almost entirely customizable. Once a consumer had made the choice between the base preference of the Contract, Universal or Segmented base tables then it was all about the top. All were available in the traditional circular or square shape, but the Segmented table could be customized to virtually any size and shape. Over the years there would be choices of natural Rosewood, Walnut or Ash as well as white and grey micarta. The tables were so functional and available in so many options that they became a hugely popular choice in the domestic home and commercial workplace.
