They started as a competition entry, the 1948 modern design competition held by the Museum of Modern Art in New York (MOMA), to be exact. The fiberglass chairs of Charles Eames were not even fiberglass at all but made in Aluminum. The design merited second place but would go on to prove to be one of, if not the most, successful of all time. Fast forward two years and the expensive metal had been replaced with Zenaloy, a molded fiberglass which was super strong, could be dyed in any color and had bucket loads of flexibility. Once the arm-less option had been added the design was virtually unstoppable, finding a place in homes, schools, offices and colleges the world over. The success of the Eames fiberglass chairs was very much down to their versatility, being made available in a host of base options, colors, fabrics and finishes. If you thought the Eames Fiberglass chairs were the first success, you would be mistaken. The molded plywood chairs took that mantle when released in 1946. They were also the first to use that Eames Office ploy of using interchangeable bases to create varying options. Charles Eames was able to scratch the itch of finally releasing designs in metal with the 1951 Wire chairs, based on the design, shape and flexibility of the fiberglass side chair range. By 1957 and the release of the Aluminium Group would be the pinnacle of this, chairs which are still deployed in home and commercial offices to this day.
