Part of the Alu Group series, the Eames Alu Group Ribbed Ottoman Stool was generally designed to be used in conjunction with either the Alu Lounge Chair or Alu Recliner but it was made available to buy separately.
Using the same technology from the Alu chairs, the material was stretched between the frame and pressed to give that distinctive look and the Eames Alu Ottoman Stool perfectly matched the Lounger and Recliner from the series. It was always available separately with the theory that it was better to be offered individually to give the buyer the choice in terms of taste, comfort, space and or price depending on their needs.. This despite the fact that almost always the Ottoman appeared in ads alongside the Recliner or Lounger.
The Eames Alu Ottoman could also be utilized as a stylish stool, in environments such as waiting rooms, lounges, dressing and changing rooms. It will however always be generally recognized as part of a set with the rest of the group.
The Alu Ottoman only went through two generational developments in terms of the base changes. From the first edition with the contract pedestal base to the Universal base in the mid 60's and it remained always on the 4 leg version through the decades until present.
The Ottoman has been in continuous manufacture since it's market release in 1958 and has been available in the same fabric choices as those of the chairs in the series. From Saran to Naugahyde, Hopsack and the later Leather.
Alu Group product codes are a source of confusion for buyers, sellers and collectors. Our Alu Group Classification page will help to make sense of them all. The Ottoman is much simpler and was the only model of the group that retained the same code for both the Pedestal and Universal base types while they ran concurrently, the purchaser simply had to specify. Ottoman related codes and bases are below:
Height | 17.375" | 44.13 cm |
Width | 21.125" | 53.66 cm |
Depth | 21" | 53.34 cm |
Seat height | 17.375" | 44.13 cm |

Feet | Nylon Feet |
We define the generations of the Alu Group based upon the bases on which they stand. The Ottoman actually had one less change than the chairs as they did not ever require the extra stability offered by the 5 star Universal bases which the chairs adopted in 1985. Even though the differing bases of the Alu group were available side by side for a period, it is the best way to aid in dating and valuing a model from the series.
1st generation Alu Group Ottoman on pedestal base
1st Generation
Following the rest of the series, the Alu Group Ottoman made its first appearance in the marketplace in 1958 and came sporting the 4 way pedestal base utilizing Nylon foot glides.
Made from polished aluminum, the base gave great width support and glossy looks while untarnished.
The Ottoman was available to buy separately but is often found in a set with a Lounge Chair or Recliner.
The first gen was available in either Saran plastic (outdoor) mesh or Naugahyde Vinyl.

2nd generation Universal base seen on the Eames Alu Ottoman
2nd Generation
Brought in during the mid 60's the Universal base was the second generation of the Alu Group.
The new base had far more flexibility in that it could be fitted with either floor glides or moving castors within one design. The Alu Ottoman of course was not made available on castors.
The Ottoman differs from that of the chairs in the series in that it always remained on a 4 star base even when chairs were changed to 5. It is therefore essentially the same today as it was when it was released to the market, apart from the larger range of fabrics and leather.
