A set of vintage Herman Miller Eames white shells emboldened by their Alexander Girard-designed brown polynit upholstery and sat on some newer, used DSR bases. The soft fabric gives this chair an extra warm feeling which contrasts the stark metal of the DSR base perfectly creating a great example of this iconic chair.
The Eames shells require little introduction with prototypes beginning in the late 1940s, production began in 1950. Arm shells were the first to be produced and the side shells were introduced in 1952/1953.
Alexander Girard was commissioned to help design a wide variety of upholstery finishes for both the side and arm shells, providing an alternative to the standard fiberglass shells and expanding the buying options for these chairs.
Individual Characteristics
The side shells are in good vintage condition with the shell displaying no cracks or dents though the fabric is markedly aged and may be lifting in some areas and may have some very slight nicks in it, further pictures are available upon request.
The ‘S’ inside the circle stamp signifies the shell originates from Herman Miller’s Summit Plastics factory.
