Description

A pair of iconic, vintage, Herman Miller Elephant Grey Eames side shells on very nice newer, used, natural Walnut DSW Dowel bases creates a beautiful chair and is made even more popular due to the highly coveted nature of its colour. Elephant grey was one of the first colours produced when these shells were created.

This brilliant example needs little introduction since it is a sought-after original colour Charles and Ray used when first constructing the chairs in 1952/53. The fiberglass chairs have always been popular and their versatility is increasing this year by year. These chairs really do envisage Charles’s dream of a ‘chairs for the masses’.

The earlier shells had a base colour and displayed the wondrous texture of the ‘fibers’ in the shell. Later versions of the shells, introduced by Herman Miller, could also be bought with an upholstered cover, from vinyl to fabric. To create the amazing patterns on the fabric finishes, Charles and Ray looked to the esteemed Alexander Girard to design them.

Individual Characteristics

The chairs are in very good condition for their age. There are no chips or cracks, though one shell may show evidence of a repaired one. Shells may require a general clean.

The stamp, which may be a little less present on some of the shells, indicates these shells were produced in 1957 by Herman Miller.
