Name: A Year Of Growth – Herman Miller

Date: 1977

No. Pages: 46

No. Eames Pages: 6

Synopsis: As with all incorporated companies, a stockholder’s report was an annually produced statement to show financial position and a sense of company purpose and discourse. This, the 1977 version, is an interesting read as it displays in full color imagery the development of Herman Miller as a manufacturing base. There are also insights into company programs, the summer picnic and on location with installations of new and familiar products including those by Charles & Ray Eames. Visible are seeds of the Herman Miller of today, with a piece on the ‘Scanlon Plan’ a program about the role of work becoming more than a paycheck but a sense of purpose. It also contains elements you wouldn’t associate with a 21st century Herman Miller, with a piece on clients arriving by Leer Jet to ‘see for themselves’. As expected, a great many pages are devoted to financial statements.
