Mid-century design was highly influenced by the very real need for items with a small overall footprint. Post war USA would see a boom in low cost housing and with this came the need for furniture designs that would save space as well as provide function, form and aesthetic beauty. The 1951 Compact Sofa was a fine example of mid-century furniture design at its very best. The Compact Sofa was exceptionally sleek in situ, utilizing thin but comfortable cushioning around an eye pleasing Aluminum frame. But its most intelligent feature was almost hidden to the naked eye. By the removal of the two bolts on the rear, the whole back section would fold up into the seat, creating a super thin, foldable sofa option that could even be stored away with little to no footprint.
In the mid 1960’s Herman Miller commissioned Charles and Ray Eames to produce a new sofa design for their portfolio of products that could be used across both the domestic and commercial marketplace. The result was model 3473, essentially an enlarged and non-collapsible version of the Compact Sofa. This enlarged version was true to the slim and sleek nature of the inspiring Compact Sofa but was larger and arguably more comfortable for long term use.
The third and final Sofa from Charles and Ray Eames was undoubtedly a best till last design and was released posthumously to Charles Eames death in 1984 as a finalization of an earlier project. The combination of beautiful soft and supple leather atop a gorgeous real teak frame was a sight to behold and is now one of the most sought after of all Eames designs.
