Read more history of this hard to find (and tricky to identify) model directly from the source: https://www.eamesinstitute.org/collection/eames-furniture-last-decade/psca-36/
Shell Construction: Smooth‑edged white fiberglass shell with fully integrated polyurethane‑foam padding bonded to the interior surface
Upholstery: Fiery red‑orange vinyl (Naugahyde‑style) neatly welted around the perimeter
Base: Original Eames Contract (“Summit Prime”) five‑star aluminum base, stamped with the Summit “S” in a circle and the Herman Miller word mark on the underside
Casters & Mechanism: Four vintage metal casters (smooth‑rolling on hardwood or low‑pile carpet) 360° swivel atop a threaded‑column height adjust
While the PSCA‑36 was offered in “no‑wheels” and “fixed‑height” versions, this example retains its full secretarial appointments.
Condition Shell & Upholstery: Excellent rigidity; foam padding remains supportive. Minor surface wear and a discreet 1/4" puncture on the top head rest (see detail photo), purely cosmetic.
Base & Casters: Solid aluminum base with intact Summit “S” logo. Casters roll freely; minor patina on metal consistent with age.
Mechanism: Height‑adjust and swivel operate smoothly, with no wobble.
Why This Chair Stands Out The PSCA‑36 represents the Eameses’ “secretarial” iteration—a milestone in office‑chair design that married the side chair shell form with all‑over foam comfort. Its fully padded interior and dynamic Summit base make it uniquely different from the other secretarial models while it retains its functional and visually striking appeal. True lovers of Ray and Charles Eames will appreciate both the rarity of the PSCA‑36 model and the wonderful condition of the vibrant red‑orange naugahyde upholstery.
