Login to ask a questionA vintage Herman Miller black Eames arm shell with stunning green Alexander Girard designed fabric upholstery and replaced dark wood RAR base is a great blend. The fabric finish is the iconic look stunning with its deep shade of dark green and sat on the rocking base makes it a coveted lounge piece.
The Eames shells require little introduction with prototypes beginning in the 1940s, production began in 1950. Arm shells were the first to be produced and the side shells were introduced in 1952/1953.
Alexander Girard was commissioned to help design a wide variety of upholstery finishes for both the side and arm shells, providing an alternative to the standard fiberglass shells and expanding the buying options for these chairs.
Individual Characteristics
The arm shell is in a used condition and would benefit from a good clean. The fabric does not display any cuts or tears but does have some minor lifting to the back edge of the seat – further pictures can be provided.
The ‘Cpi’ symbol on the shell indicates this shell was produced in Herman Miller’s Century Plastics factory which was used between 1974 and 1982.
