It may very well be argued that the stool designs of Charles and Ray Eames tend to be some of the more overlooked, some of the least prominent of their comprehensive portfolio perhaps. The number of stools may well not number that of the chair designs but make no mistake, they mattered and there was a common theme too, multi-functionality.
Right from the get-go there was a stool involved. The first commercially produced Eames furniture line, the small but super cute pieces for kids had a nested stool as part of its fledgling range. Even this most basic of design had big ideas to be no mere sitting option. Matching the chairs, it could be a stand-alone stool sure, but it could also be a table, it could be nested, and it was available in a range of bright happy colors or natural wood too. It was the perfect accompaniment to this most delicate of furniture Charles Eames ever produced.
Charles Eames once quoted ‘whatever I can do, Ray can do better’ and it may come as a surprise to many to hear that the group of Walnut stools, turned out for the commissioned lobby of the New York Time Life building in 1961, were all her work. Initially a series of four designs, they were refined down to three symmetrical ideas for the production release. They have continued to baffle many over the decades as to what they are. Are they stools? Are they side tables? Are they both? There is that famous multi-functionality again.
It wouldn’t be right for the fiberglass plastic chair series not to have stools would it. Such a range where the literal function of the chair top could be changed entirely with the introduction of a series of varying base types all designed for different tasks. Draftsman stools of varying heights were made available to cater for every possible task, all with a circular footrest for ease of comfort and finding that ideal working position. There was the MBP stools too, a range of pedestal stools designed to be mounted to the ground and offering varying degrees of spin or tilt as well as return function.
The Alu Group and subsequent Soft Pad ranges would both have an available stool option too. Perhaps more of an ottoman than a tradition stool, they were made available as a singular purchase making them the luxury stool of choice.
