Login to ask a questionA lemon yellow original authentic Eames fiberglass side shell chair for Herman Miller on a used, newer black DSW dowel base, makes a very desirable combination. The striking yellow shell has a wonderful deep colour with fantastic clearly seen visible fibers which are enhanced by the deep colour of the dowel base.
The Eames shell series chairs really do not need any introduction. With early prototypes beginning in the late 1940's, production began on the Eames' dream of 'chairs for the masses' in 1950 with the arm and then the sides later in 1952/53. The original and vintage fiberglass chairs were so versatile and so modern that they only increase in popularity as the years go by.
Fiberglass originals always have a base colour and gorgeous 'visible' fibers in the shell itself. Upholstered version were introduced by Herman Miller a little later on using fabrics and textiles designed by the esteemed designer Alexander Girard.
Individual Characteristics
A used vintage version of the shell chair, the condition is mostly good for its age, though there are some ingrained areas of dirt and the edges display a little bit of colour loss – further images can be provided to display this.
The remains of the stamp on the underside of the shell indicates this is an early Summit Plastics shell for Herman Miller which likely dates it as a 1959 shell chair.
