A pair of vintage, Herman Miller produced, Eames black side shells are emboldened by their original Alexander Girard designed grey upholstery and newer, used black DSW dowel bases making some great examples of this iconic chair. The fabric finish looks stylish with its blue/grey finish on its striking black shell.
The Eames shells require little introduction with prototypes beginning in the 1940s, production began in 1950. Arm shells were the first to be produced and the side shells were introduced in 1952/1953.
Alexander Girard was commissioned to help design a wide variety of upholstery finishes for both the side and arm shells, providing an alternative to the standard fiberglass shells and expanding the buying options for these chairs.
The side shells are in good condition for their age with only some light marking expected with age. The fabric does display a little more of its age but an hour or so of cleaning will help reduce this. The colour is a little lighter than the camera has been able to pick up, the second to last image best outlines the colour of the fabric.
The ‘S’ stamp signifies the shells originate from the Summit Herman Miller factory.
