A wonderfully unique, original, Eames orange 2nd generation Zenith Plastics MAX chair on black ‘X’ base is a perfect lounge chair for home or for reception use. The MAX base was introduced in 1953 and replaced the SAX and LAX bases to give only two options for the ‘X’ bases series, the iconic DAX and the new MAX.
The ‘X’ base was one of the first bases made available for the Eames shells series and was most commonly used on the arm shell version of them. It became a consistent and regular seller for the series, helping shoot them to fame, with being such a sturdy and reliable base. The MAX was only available for about a year, however, as Herman Miller’s involvement, and eventual complete manufacture of the chairs, saw the base change into the ‘new X base’, known more commonly as the ‘H’ base.
Individual Characteristics
The shell has aged well. It has faded to a very pale orange which could almost be viewed as parchment; but this is one of the most defining features of this colour and always gives each chair their own unique character. It displays no cracks or dents but does have age related marks and scuffs, especially around the edges.
The original MAX base is in good vintage condition too with only some natural signs of wear.
The large shock mounts on the underside of the shell is indicative of this being a 2nd generation zenith arm shell.
