Product Description

A unique example of a pair of vintage Eames Herman Miller orange DSR ‘Eiffel’ side chairs look stunning in their original orange upholstery by Alexander Girard. The gorgeous combination of orange checker on orange is complimented by the stark black of the newer, used, DSR bases creating some rather novel dining chairs.

The upholstered versions of the Eames shells were designed from the Eames’s great personal friend Alexander Girard, who became the head of textiles at Herman Miller. Girard was meticulous when it came to his work, producing many various textile designs which were also used as wallpaper.

Herman Miller faithfully reintroduced the fiberglass shell and with it maintained the upholstered options for them. The options available are still numerous, available in various fabrics in various colours.

Individual Characteristics

These are a great example of a very unique finish. Most upholstered shells utilised either white, black or greige shells but occasionally stunning pieces such as these were produced which used coloured shells with selected upholstered finishes. These particular pieces are in good vintage condition with no cuts, tears, cracks or dents. The upholstery does show some signs of its age and would benefit from a good clean, but this will help re-invigorate the original finish.

The ‘C’ with the star logo on the underside of the shell indicates this shell originates from Herman Miller’s Cincinnati factory.
