Product Description

This is a beautiful, used, Umber Herman Miller Eames Side Shells on a natural Walnut DSW Dowel base. With touches of greens and grey, it creates a beautifully blended tone which highlights the natural light oak wood. Unique in its colour, this muted, umber side shell chair is highly desirable in its aesthetic qualities, perfect for those looking to add a minimalistic piece to their homes.

The earlier shells had a base colour and displayed the wondrous texture of the ‘fibers’ in the shell. Later versions of the shells, introduced by Herman Miller, could also be bought with an upholstered cover, from vinyl to fabric. To create the amazing patterns on the fabric finishes, Charles and Ray looked to the esteemed Alexander Girard to design them. The fiberglass chairs have always been popular, and their versatility is increasing this year by year. These chairs really do envisage Charles’s dream of a ‘chairs for the masses’.

Individual Characteristics

Despite its age and use, this chair remains in excellent condition, with a few scratches on the surface but otherwise still as good as new- further images are available upon request. The DSW was one of the original designs for the base of the shell chairs, and the distinct colour of the umber is a must-have!

The Herman Miller and Summit ‘S’ stamps indicate that this side shell chair was produced around 1959-1989.
